Joelson Gusson is a theatre director, performer, set designer and dramaturgist, based in Rio. Graduated in Drama Theoretical Studies at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UNIRIO, 2008; Technical course in Acting and Performing at the Casa das Artes de Laranjeiras – CAL, 1996; and highly trained in the Method of the Physical Action and in the Viewpoints Method. Gusson has been very active in the field of contemporary and experimental theatre, having worked with important directors such as Enrique Diaz and Gerald Thomas. In 1998, he founded his own company, Dragão Voador Teatro Contemporâneo, and has staged since then all the spectacles created in direct collaboration with the artists involved: Paisagem Nua (2011) in collaboration with Thereza Rocha, Manifesto Ciborgue (Cyborg Manifesto), (2007/08); O Que Nos Resta é o Silêncio (And what remains is silence) (2005/07); As Criadas (The Maids) (2004/05); and Os Colecionadores (The Collectors) (1998/99). In 2007, he was awarded the Myriam Muniz Prize (Funarte) for the creation and production of the piece O Que Nos Resta é o Silêncio (And what remains is silence). Still with his company, he directed the short film A Memória do Outro (The memory of the others) (2008). He is member of the Coletivo Improviso, directed by Enrique Diaz and Mariana Lima, having played in the piece Não Olhe Agora, premiered at Festival Riocenacontemporânea, in 2003, and later performed in several festivals and venues in France (Ferme de Buisson/Paris, Festival d’ Aurillac, La Filature/Mulhouse, Menagerie de Verre/Paris, Theatrè du Merlan/Marselha and Theatrè du Maillon/Strasbourg. He was previously a member of Gerald Thomas’ Cia de Ópera Seca (Dryopera Co.), having performed in the several pieces of the company, among them the opera Tristan and Isolde, working as performer and directing assistant, at the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro (2003). In 2008/09, together with Dani Amorim, he directed and produced the five-month artistic occupation -Orquestra Improviso Project –, with the two collective groups Coletivo Improviso and Pequena Orquestra, at the Teatro Gláucio Gil in Rio de Janeiro. For the time being, he’s working as an actor in the piece Festen, at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, directed by Bruce Gomlewsky and has been invited together with Dani Amorim to co-direct with Enrique Diaz the new project of the Coletivo Improviso.
Other works as a performer: Amor Consciente (Conscious Love) (1997) and Cinema Karamazovi, an adaptation from the Dostoievski’s novel Brothers Karamazovi, both directed by Celina Sodré, 2002; Um Quarto de Crime e Castigo (A Room of Crime and Punishment), adaptation from the Dostoievski’s novel Crime and Punishment, directed by Ivan Sugahara, 2000/02; and the short film Verdade ou Conseqüência (Truth or Consequence) directed by Aleques Eiterer, 2001, having been seen in several film festival worldwide.
